“RUN, Alexandra! Don’t look back!”
The desperate scream echoed in Alexandra’s mind as she jolted awake, her chest heaving. She sat up in bed, drenched in sweat, clutching the sheets like a lifeline. Her mother’s face haunted her, blood streaking down her pale cheeks as she screamed at Alexandra to flee. The flames of the burning village roared in the background, their smoke choking Alexandra’s lungs even in her dreams.
Her heart pounded as she saw it again—Alpha Raven, her uncle, standing over her father’s lifeless body, his cold smile filled with triumph. His voice dripped with venom as he sneered, “The Alpha King is dead. And the crown is mine.”
Alexandra’s breath hitched, and she buried her face in her hands, willing the memories to fade. But they never did.
The door creaked open, and Nana Lea shuffled in, her wrinkled face etched with worry. “Another nightmare, child?” she asked softly.
Alexandra nodded, her voice trembling. “It’s always the same. I see him… I see her…”
Nana sat on the edge of the bed, her frail hands resting over Alexandra’s. “You’ve been running from this for years, but the past doesn’t stay buried forever. If he ever finds out you’re alive—”
“I know,” Alexandra interrupted, her frustration evident. She pushed the covers aside and stood. “He’ll kill me, right? That’s all I ever hear from you. But Nana, I’m not that helpless little girl anymore.”
“You’re still not ready to face him,” Nana shot back, her voice firm despite her fragile frame. “You may want to forget who you are, but you can’t. He’ll stop at nothing to destroy you, Alexandra.”
Alexandra sighed, her shoulders slumping. “All I want is a normal life.”
But deep down, she knew there was no such thing for her.
At university, Alexandra tried to shake off the weight of the nightmare. The campus buzzed with energy, students chatting and laughing as they rushed to classes. She spotted Liam near the fountain, casually leaning against a bench with his easy smile that always made her stomach flutter.
Liam was gorgeous in a quiet, boy-next-door way. His sandy blond hair curled slightly at the edges, framing his sharp jawline and warm hazel eyes. He was tall and athletic, always wearing his favorite leather jacket over a fitted shirt that hinted at his lean muscles. Most importantly, Liam made her feel safe—like he’d do anything to protect her.
“Alex!” Liam waved, his grin widening as she approached. “You look like you didn’t sleep again. Are you okay?”
Alexandra rolled her eyes, though her lips twitched in a smile. “Gee, thanks for the reminder.”
“Come on, I’m just worried about you.” His tone softened as he brushed a stray strand of her dark hair behind her ear. “You know I’m always here for you, right?”
Her heart skipped a beat at the touch. “I know,” she murmured, looking away to hide her blush.
Liam chuckled. “Come on, let’s get to class before I have to carry you there.”
The lecture hall buzzed with conversation until a sudden hush fell over the room. Alexandra glanced toward the entrance and froze.
A new student walked in. He was tall, at least six-foot-three, with broad shoulders that filled out his black leather jacket. His dark hair fell messily over his forehead, but it didn’t hide the sharp, chiseled features of his face—high cheekbones, a strong jaw, and piercing silver-gray eyes that scanned the room like a predator.
Alexandra’s pulse quickened as those eyes locked onto hers. For a moment, the world seemed to blur, and all she could feel was the strange magnetic pull toward him.
Liam leaned closer, whispering, “Why is he looking at you like that?”
“I… I don’t know,” Alexandra whispered back, her stomach knotting.
The new student smirked as he walked to an empty seat, his confidence palpable. Alexandra tried to focus on the lecture, but she could feel his gaze burning into her the entire time.
Later that day, Alexandra was walking across campus, still distracted by the encounter. She shook her head, scolding herself for letting some stranger get under her skin.
“Hey, princess.”
She turned sharply, her heart leaping into her throat. The new student—Agor—stood just a few feet away, leaning casually against a tree. Up close, he was even more striking, his silver eyes almost glowing in the afternoon light.
“What did you call me?” she demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.
Agor’s smirk widened. “You heard me.”
