ANNA’S POV
The metallic doors of the elevator slid open with a soft chime, and I stepped inside, clutching the file folder against my chest like a life jacket.
Joseph Kosturos, my boss, followed closely behind, his sharp, calculating eyes already assessing me like he always did.
“Anna, listen carefully,” he said, pressing the button for the fifteenth floor. “Once we get into that conference room, I want you seated next to me. Keep your head down, smile politely, and only speak when spoken to. Got it?”
I nodded quickly. “Yes, Mr. Kosturos.”
He glanced at the folder I was holding. “You have the New York file, right?”
I held it up slightly as proof. “Right here, sir.”
He gave a tight nod, the corners of his mouth twitching as if a real smile was too much effort. "Good. Don’t mess this up."
I swallowed hard, trying to suppress the growing knot in my stomach. This meeting was critical — not just for the company but for me personally. I needed to prove I could handle real responsibility, even if Joseph treated me like a glorified assistant most of the time.
The elevator dinged, breaking the heavy silence, and we stepped out onto a gleaming marble floor that screamed power and money.
The conference room was just ahead, its tall glass doors looming like a gateway to another world.
Joseph marched in first, and I followed, feeling the weight of at least a dozen eyes turn toward us. A few people were already seated around the massive oak table, murmuring in low tones.
Their suits were crisp, their expressions bored but alert. Still, the chair at the head of the table, the most important seat, remained empty.
I slid into the seat beside Joseph, placing the folder neatly in front of me, hands trembling slightly as I smoothed out my skirt. I barely had time to gather my thoughts before the door opened again.
And that was when everything changed.
He walked in like he owned the world.
Damien Domingo.
Even his name sounded like trouble wrapped in a designer suit. He exuded a kind of raw, magnetic energy that made everyone in the room sit a little straighter, breathe a little quieter.
His tailored navy suit clung to his broad shoulders perfectly, and his dark hair was slicked back with just enough carelessness to hint at rebellion underneath all that polish.
I couldn’t look away.
His eyes, cold, calculating, impossibly dark swept the room, assessing, commanding, daring anyone to challenge him.
When his gaze landed on me, my heart stumbled, skipped, and then hammered against my ribs like a drum.
Something electric passed between us, something hot and dangerous, and for a terrifying second, I forgot how to breathe.
I must’ve been staring like an idiot because Joseph’s voice snapped me back to reality.
“Anna,” he hissed under his breath, giving me a sharp elbow in the side. “Focus.”
I jerked my eyes away, cheeks flaming.
What the hell was wrong with me? I wasn’t some swooning schoolgirl. I was here for business, serious, career-defining business.
Damien took his seat at the head of the table without a word, commanding silence without even asking for it. He rested his hands on the table, long fingers tapping thoughtfully against the polished wood as he surveyed the room.
Joseph leaned over and whispered, "Get ready. You're up first."
My stomach twisted painfully. Oh, God.
Clearing his throat, Joseph announced, "We’ll begin with a presentation from Anna Turner, representing Kosturos Industries."
Every eye in the room turned to me. Including his.
I stood up, legs feeling like wet noodles, and opened the folder with trembling fingers.
I could feel Damien’s gaze locked onto me, heavy and unrelenting, and it took everything in me to tear my eyes away from him and focus on the task at hand.
I cleared my throat. "Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to present today..."
My voice sounded surprisingly steady, at first.
But then, halfway through my second slide, I risked a glance at Damien.
Big mistake.
He was leaning back in his chair, arms crossed, watching me with a gaze so intense it felt like he could see right through me.
I stumbled over my words.
"...um, as you can see, the projected quarterly—" I stopped, swallowed hard, and forced myself to look back at the screen.
Get it together, Anna.
I took a deep breath and pushed through, but every time our eyes met, it was like my brain short-circuited. His gaze wasn’t just curious, it was amused. Like he knew exactly how flustered he was making me.
By the time I wrapped up the presentation, I was sweating under my blazer, my hands clammy, my heart racing.
"Thank you," I finished breathlessly, closing the folder and sitting down as quickly as possible.
The room was silent for a moment, the kind of silence that stretched and suffocated.
Damien opened his mouth, about to speak, when his phone buzzed loudly against the table.
He glanced at the screen, his brows tightening slightly.
"Excuse me," he said in a voice that was deep, smooth, and commanding. Without another word, he stood and strode out of the room, phone pressed to his ear.
The second the door closed behind him, Joseph turned on me like a viper.
"What the hell was that?" he snapped, his voice low but vicious.
