Chapter 5

Sophie’s head pounded like a drum, her throat dry as sandpaper.

With a groggy groan, she peeled her eyes open, only to be met with an unfamiliar ceiling.

Where the hell am I?

She blinked, trying to force her brain to catch up. Her body ached, her head felt heavy, and there was a weird taste in her mouth—like…vodka?

She pushed herself up, glancing around. The room was huge—sleek black furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows with a breathtaking city view, and soft, dim lighting.

Definitely not my apartment.

Thinking gave her a headache, a sensation that felt eerily similar to a hangover. Slowly, fragmented memories began to flood her mind, and she couldn’t help but shiver. Then it hit her.

Alex Donald…

Her boss. She had been with him earlier. Was she… in his house?

Her terrifying, arrogant, frustratingly good-looking boss.

She shot up in bed, heart hammering. Before she could piece things together, the door swung open.

And there he was.

Alex strolled in like he owned the world, dressed in a simple black t-shirt and gray sweatpants, his hair tousled in that effortlessly attractive way.

Sophie’s jaw dropped. She had no idea how she was going to fix the mess she’d made. To this cold, arrogant man, Alex—hell, even jumping off a building probably wouldn’t be enough to satisfy him.

“You’re finally awake,” he drawled, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed.

Her breath hitched. She wasn’t dreaming.

A horrified gasp left her lips. “Oh my God.”

Alex raised a brow, amused. “Something wrong?”

Sophie scrambled out of bed, her heart racing. Did we...? No. No way. She glanced down at herself—she was wearing a men’s oversized white shirt. It hung loosely off her frame, the fabric soft and slightly wrinkled, yet it somehow made her look effortlessly sexy. What the hell had she done? Panic bubbled inside her.

“I—where—why am I here?” she sputtered, grabbing her bag and phone in a rush.

Alex watched her with mild amusement. “You don’t remember?”

Her fingers trembled as she checked her phone. Dead battery. Great.

Alex took a step closer. “Relax. You passed out, so I brought you here. And you’ve got vomit all over your clothes too, so I let you borrow mine. Nothing happened.”

She let out a relieved breath before glaring at him. “You should have taken me home instead.”

He rolled his eyes. “How was I supposed to do that when I don't know your home address? Would you rather I left you unconscious in my car covered in vomit?”

Her stomach dropped. “I—what? Oh my God,” she whispered, horrified. “Oh my actual God.”

Alex smirked. “Glad to see your memory’s back.”

Sophie groaned, covering her face with both hands. “I’m so sorry. I swear I don’t usually drink that much.”

Alex chuckled. “I should hope not.”

Mortified, Sophie tried to make a quick escape. “Well, thank you for…everything. I’ll just be going now.”

She turned toward the door, but his voice stopped her.

“Have a drink with me.”

She froze, then slowly turned back. “What?”

Alex grabbed another glass of wine from a nearby table and handed it to her. “You owe me. For saving your ass.”

“I—I don’t think—”

He smirked. “What, you vomited all over my shirt and my car, now you’re suddenly uncomfortable around me?”

She swallowed. “I just…need to go to work. We–”

Alex cut her off. “It’s weekend. You know my rules about weekend.”

Sophie gulped thinking, Yeah, no work on work on weekend. He might be a known womanizer but he was a good boss.

“I better go home, thank you–”

Alex took a slow sip of his wine, watching her. “Are you avoiding me?”

Sophie stiffened.

“I’m not avoiding you, Mr. Donald.”

“Then sit. And what did I tell you about calling me Mr. Donald? Just Alex.”

It was a challenge—exactly what Sophie needed. If a crush was a dream, it was time to wake up. She wasn’t going to let her emotions dictate her actions anymore. Things had reached this point, and it was time to face them head-on. Her pride wouldn’t let her back down.

“If Alex is still talking to me, I must matter to him, at least a little,” Sophie thought. With a huff, she grabbed the glass from his hand and sat down.

Alex smirked, settling beside her. For a moment, they drank in silence, the rich red wine warming her chest.

Then, he broke the silence.

“So. What were you doing at that club?”

Sophie sighed. “I went with my friend.”

“The one you were gossiping and left you alone?”

She nodded.

Alex’s jaw tensed. “And why did you leave so abruptly in the office?”

She hesitated, then sighed.

“Because I couldn’t believe you kissed me. And I needed to clear my head.”

Alex tilted his head, watching her. He leaned closer. “Did it work?”

She licked her lips, her fingers tightening around the wine glass. “I don’t know.”

Alex set his drink down. “I kissed you because I wanted to.”

Her heart skipped a beat. She looked at him, searching for some kind of joke or mockery, but there was none. His expression was unreadable, his gaze steady.

Heat crept up her neck. She gulped more wine.

“Why do you always yell at me?” she blurted, a little tipsy now.

Alex smirked. “Because you’re frustrating.”

She rolled her eyes. “You know, people are scared of you.”

“Are you?”

Sophie hesitated. “Not really. Maybe at first.”

His lips twitched. “And now?”

Sophie felt his eyes on her—dark and filled with desire as he scanned her. Her breath caught in her throat. He took another gulp of his drink, never breaking eye contact.

“You look so goddamn sexy in that shirt, Sophie. You don’t know what you’re doing to me.”

She exhaled, trying to steady herself. “I used to like you. Or maybe I still do. I have no idea anymore.”

The air between them grew thick, charged with something neither of them could deny.

Alex stood from his stool, moving toward her.

Sophie looked up, heart thudding.

Gone was the innocence in her eyes. Alex leaned down, studying her face, his gaze flickering to her lips. Before he could do anything, Sophie grabbed his shirt, yanked him closer, and crushed her lips to his.
