Chapter 3
“Another one, please.”
Sophie slid her empty glass toward the bartender, her fingers tightening around the rim as if it could hold back the thoughts crashing in her head.
She was already tipsy, but the alcohol wasn’t doing what she needed it to. It wasn’t wiping out the memory of Alex’s lips on hers.
It wasn’t making her forget the way her stomach had flipped when he pulled her closer. If anything, it only made her hyper-aware of everything.
She groaned, running a hand through her hair in frustration.
"Girl, you need to stop drowning yourself in alcohol and start enjoying the night!" Benita shouted over the loud music, twirling around on the dance floor.
Sophie sighed. "I am enjoying it."
Benita gave her a look. "Come dance!"
“Ugh, you’re impossible.” Benita licked her lips. “I could tell you were upset, so I thought a little fun might help lift your mood. But I didn’t expect you to be so stubborn about it.” She spun around, disappearing into the crowd of dancers.
Earlier that afternoon, Sophie had called her, hesitant and flustered, but never fully explaining what had happened. Benita wasn’t one to play guessing games. She was convinced that if Sophie could just find an outlet, everything would be better. And so, she had practically dragged her to the club.
Sophie sighed and took another sip of her drink, only to be interrupted by a man sliding into the seat next to her.
"Hey there, gorgeous," he said smoothly, a smirk playing on his lips. "Haven’t seen you around here before."
Sophie barely spared him a glance. "Not interested."
The guy chuckled. "Ouch, that was fast. At least let me buy you a drink."
"I already have one."
"Alright, alright. Tough crowd," he mused, leaning in slightly. "So, what’s a beautiful woman like you doing here alone?"
Sophie exhaled sharply, setting her glass down with more force than necessary. "I said, not interested."
The guy raised his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright. No need to bite my head off." He slid off the stool and disappeared into the crowd.
Sophie let out a breath. She wasn’t in the mood for flirtations—especially not when her mind was already tangled up in a man she had no business thinking about.
"Alright, enough sulking," she muttered to herself.
Finishing the last of her drink, she got up and made her way toward the dance floor. If she couldn’t drink the memory away, maybe she could dance it away.
She found Benita in the middle of the crowd, laughing as she swayed to the music. Sophie let herself be pulled in, moving to the beat, letting the music take over.
After a few minutes, Benita leaned in. "So, are we going to talk about it or not?"
Sophie blinked. "Talk about what?"
Benita gave her a knowing look. "About why you suddenly have the face of someone whose whole world just got turned upside down."
Sophie hesitated.
Benita grinned. "Come on, you know I’m not going to let this go."
Sophie sighed. "Fine, but not here."
They moved to a quieter lounge area, away from the chaos of the dance floor.
“Spill,” Benita demanded, crossing her arms.
Sophie took a deep breath. “Alex kissed me.”
Benita froze for a moment, as if she were just processing what Sophie had said. Her eyes widened. “Wait, what? You mean…”
Sophie nodded. “Yes, my boss.”
Benita gasped. "Oh my God."
Sophie groaned, rubbing her temples. "After you left earlier. He called me to his office, said he overheard us talking about my crush on him—"
"Yeah, yeah," Sophie muttered, seemed she said to herself. "Anyway, he said he was curious. Asked if I’d ever thought about kissing him."
Benita leaned forward. "And?"
Sophie hesitated before sighing. "And then he kissed me."
Benita squealed. "Shut up! And? Was it good? Was it hot?"
Sophie groaned. "That’s not the point! The point is, I don’t know what to do now. I can’t just—work for him like nothing happened. I should quit."
Benita scoffed. "Quit? Are you crazy? You have a great job, Sophie. Just because he kissed you doesn’t mean you have to leave. Maybe it’s a good thing!"
Sophie shot her a look. "A good thing?"
Benita grinned. "Duh! You’ve been crushing on him for ages. Maybe he’s into you too."
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Or maybe he’s just playing with me because he thinks it’s funny that I had a crush on him."
Benita raised an eyebrow. “That guy’s a total catch. A womanizer, but a total catch, you know what I mean? Women would kill to be in your shoes right now.”
Sophie sighed. “Oh, I know all about his womanizing. He’s the best at it. I don’t even know why I have a crush on him. He’s a walking red flag.”
Before she could say anything else, Benita spotted a guy across the lounge and grinned. "Okay, enough sulking. I’m going to dance with that guy. Are you coming?"
Sophie shook her head. “Go ahead. I’ll grab another drink.”
Benita winked. “Hey, just go for it—pursue love, chase some guys. Who knows? You might meet someone even better here at the bar!” Then she disappeared into the crowd.
Sophie exhaled, turning back toward the bar. She just needed one more drink.
Before she could get there, the crowd surged, people dancing wildly. Someone bumped into her, sending her stumbling backward.
Her heart leapt as she felt herself falling but then, strong arms caught her.
Her breath hitched.
The scent hit her first—clean, crisp, expensive. Familiar.
Her stomach twisted.
Then, a deep, familiar voice rumbled, tinged with disbelief.
"Sophie? What are you doing here?"
Her eyes flew open.
Her heart stopped.
There, holding her firmly in his arms, was none other than Alex Donald.
The last person she wanted to see tonight.
Her boss.
