Chapter 7
"What are you doing here?" The alpha questioned, clenching his jaws as he eyed Evelyn. His beta, Calvin, was beside him, and he was staring at the omegas with an uninterested expression.
"I-I... I mean w-we were just-" Evelyn stuttered, unsure of what to say. Meanwhile, Rain sprinted to find a safe spot and hid behind Evelyn.
"Who gave you permission to go out?" The alpha interrogated, taking long strides toward the omegas.
"N-No one. I-I didn't k-know I had to ask. I'm s-sorry," Evelyn nervously chewed on her lips. The flower petals fell from her hair as she lowered her head in submission.
"Make sure you don't repeat the same mistake next time you step out of the pack-house!" The alpha scolded as he glared at the omega.
Evelyn meekly nodded in reply, afraid to speak further. Keiran shifted his gaze to the boy behind her.
"You're hanging out with him?" Keiran huffed, staring at the omega hiding behind Evelyn. Rain kept his head down, not daring to meet the alpha's eyes. "What a perfect combo!" Keiran let out a sardonic chuckle and mocked, "The weak and the weakest."
Evelyn watched helplessly as her mate's face displayed a distasteful expression.
Rain whimpered upon hearing the alpha insult them. Even though he had been hearing the same mockery for years, he still could not get used to the pain it caused him.
The urge to run off from the scene coursed through Evelyn's core. Every insult her mate threw at her pierced her heart like arrows. Evelyn believed her heart could soon break into tiny pieces that could not be put together if the insults continued.
"You're going to meet the elders in the evening, so be ready. I'll send someone to bring you when it's time," the alpha told her before turning his back to walk away from the omega's quarters.
Evelyn dumbfoundedly stared at her mate, who walked away with his beta. She was confused about who the elders were, but she did not dare question the alpha.
"Luna, doesn't the alpha like you?" Rain's soft voice plucked her back to reality.
Evelyn sighed and forced a smile that did not reach her eyes. But it was not enough to conceal the pain she was trying to hide. "It seems like he's not that fond of me," she answered Rain's question.
"But why? He's your mate. Don't mates love each other?" The boy asked, scratching his head in confusion. From what he had heard, he learned that mates were every wolf's biggest blessing.
"Well, t-that's only true for some. My case is different. My mate is the alpha, and a w-weak mate is a b-burden for him," Evelyn stammered as she bowed her head to hide her teary eyes from the boy.
"T-Then what about me? Will my mate h-hate me, too?" Rain stuttered to ask. His question made Evelyn widen her eyes in shock.
"No! It's not like that! Oh, my Goddess, that's not what I meant," Evelyn exclaimed to correct the boy's assumption. She did not want the boy to lose hope of being happy with his mate. She cupped his face and made him look up at her before speaking, "Not everyone's like that. Your mate won't hate you. You're too cute for that." She smiled genuinely to reassure the boy.
Rain blushed after hearing Evelyn's praise. Not a lot of people complimented him like that.
"Hey! You two!" A high-pitched voice compelled the omegas to turn around. They caught sight of Amelia walking toward them. She was followed by a familiar curly-haired guy.
"The alpha was looking for you. Did he come here?"
"Yeah. He left a few minutes ago."
"What did he tell you?" Amelia asked Evelyn, her voice laced with both curiosity and worry.
"Something about meeting the elders in the evening," Evelyn fought a frown that was about to form on her face as she spoke. She then asked Amelia what she wanted to ask the alpha earlier, "By the way, who are the elders?"
"Elders are people who make important decisions in the pack. People who belong to this group include the former alphas and lunas, as well as former betas and their mates. Currently, our elders are Keiran's and Calvin's parents and grandparents. Keiran has to seek permission from them whenever he has to make important decisions like choosing the next Luna, adding a new member, and initiating attacks," Amelia explained.
Evelyn listened to her attentively. Amelia expounded, "Now, if the alpha wants you to meet the elders, then that must mean he wants to discuss making you the next Luna to them." The doctor smiled after speaking.
This revelation made Evelyn more nervous and perplexed since Keiran had told her once that she could not be his Luna. Evelyn assumed this was what he would suggest to the elders. If the elders agreed, Evelyn would have no choice but to watch Keiran, her mate, be with someone else.
"What are you thinking?" Amelia questioned after perceiving Evelyn's silence. Evelyn shifted her gaze back to Amelia.
"Nothing," Evelyn smiled and shrugged it off, not wanting to continue the discussion about the possibility of her being the next Luna. She turned around to stare at Rain, who was now a blushing mess after talking to Amelia's curly-haired guy companion.
"That's Josh, my cousin," Amelia introduced the guy. Josh perked up and glanced at them.
"Hello, Luna. I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself to you the day we met," Josh spoke and smiled at Evelyn. Evelyn did not try to correct the guy who called her Luna. She knew it would be useless since everyone else continued to refer to her as Luna even though she told them not to.
"That's okay. By the way, I'm Evelyn," she replied, remembering that she had never introduced herself to him either.
"Why is Rain bushing so deeply?" Amelia asked out of the blue, drawing everyone's attention towards the omega, who flushed even more.
"Because he's a living tomato," Josh joked and ruffled the omega's hair. Rain pouted his lips in defiance.
"I'm not a tomato!" He huffed as he covered his red cheeks. "It's because he was making fun of me!" He complained and pointed to Josh, who laughed at him. Rain pouted his lips even more.
Amelia shook her head, and a small smile spread on her lips. "Boys, you can bicker later. For now, let's go inside and eat something. I'm starving," she announced as she walked towards the pack-house. Evelyn followed suit, with two bickering boys trailing behind her.
After their meal, Evelyn sat on her bed, dreading the moment her mate would reject her. She was neatly dressed, anxiously waiting to meet the elders. It was 3:43 in the afternoon.
Evelyn sat, deep in thought, worrying about everything that could happen in a few hours. Although the alpha could not reject her as his mate, she knew Keiran could reject her from being the Luna.
Evelyn jumped in surprise upon hearing the knock on the door. She hurriedly went and opened it to see a smiling omega.
"Good evening, Luna. The alpha wants to see you," the omega greeted.
Evelyn greeted her back and tried to muster a small smile, but she failed miserably.
She took a deep breath and pushed down all the bad thoughts running through her mind before following the omega upstairs.
'Please, give me the strength to endure whatever will happen today,' Evelyn silently prayed to the Moon Goddess as she took the steps towards her mate.
