Chapter 4

But instead of her, a man sat down next to me, a man I had already seen before, and then for an entire week in my dreams.

- So, Kitten is quite the adventurous one, it seems. - The man looked at me in a way that made my whole body tense up, and along with that some strange heat appeared in my lower abdomen.

- Don’t call me that. - The plus of alcohol: it gives boldness; under other circumstances, I definitely wouldn’t have snapped back at a man who was half a meter taller than me and three times bigger.

- Showing your teeth again. - His smile became even more predatory as he leaned slowly towards my ear and whispered almost inaudibly: - How should I call you then?

At the sound of his voice, a wave of heat washed over my body, and I subconsciously leaned forward, almost pressing against him.

- Amanda. - Our faces were too close together; I felt like I was paralyzed by how quickly his gaze shifted. His eyes became almost black, and there were sparkles in them that a normal person should fear rather than enjoy.

- Adam. - It took me a few seconds to realize he said his name. And just as I felt the heat of his breath on me, I finally pulled back.

- God, just don’t climb onto him. - Thankfully, no one hears my thoughts because I think from such shame no one survives.

- Nice to meet you. - Oh yes, Amanda, that’s the best thing you could say to a man who is undressing you with his gaze. - But I really have to leave. - I hadn’t even taken a step when he grabbed my hand.

- It’s dangerous for good girls to walk alone at night. - Damn that smile. I need a clear mind, and two cocktails and this man are doing everything to make my head stop working.

- Do you want to keep me company? - I will never drink again. How did I ever come up with such a thing to say to this brute? This is it, I'm done for.

- What a tempting offer, Kitten. - Again with that stupid nickname. Maybe I should gouge his eyes out so he knows that ‘Kitten’ has claws too.

- Aren’t you afraid that my company might be dangerous? - If I didn’t think about it before (hell, I didn’t think about it at all), now my instinct for self-preservation was trying to break through the feelings that came alive around this man.

- Should I be? - I didn’t expect my voice to sound so sweet. This has clearly never happened to me before.

- Not you. - This should have made it easier, but now I was worried about something else entirely: why do I feel so hot when he looks at me, where is this desire to press myself against him as closely as possible coming from, and to taste those lips that were once again shining with a smile.

- Ms. Amanda, here is where we need your signature. - Kirk puts some papers in front of me, and only then do I break my gaze from Adam, who continues to pierce me with his eyes. - These are the ones we sent you for review. Everyone has signed, and we just need your signature. - I quickly scrawl three signatures, waiting for all this to end because my patience is starting to wear thin.

- Here's to fruitful collaboration. - One of the partners raises his glass, and everyone starts to greet each other. The blonde next to Adam nearly knocked his eyes out with her bust while reaching for her glass.

- Well, the deal is settled, so I must leave you now. - I actually just want to run far away and never come back. - I will send you the first samples of the project shortly. - I put on a smile of politeness that I've honed over the years and leave the table.

Stepping outside, I finally start to breathe; my body is shaking for some reason.

- Pull yourself together. He won’t ruin anything else for you. - For some reason, those words sound more like a plea than a command right now. But my heart gradually calms down, and I head toward the car that has been waiting for me since the beginning.

- Amanda. - No, no, no, not this. I know exactly who this voice belongs to. And I definitely don’t want to face him one-on-one.

- You’re an adult. You shouldn’t run away. - The voice in my head gives me no chance to escape, so I turn around:

- Yes. Did we not discuss something? - I try to maintain my composure, but it’s hard when inside, anger mixes with passion, and I don’t know if I want to strangle him or have sex with him.

- You forgot the documents. - Adam extends a folder with copies of the contracts, and I think about how today’s evening has not gone according to plan that I even forgot the documents.

- Thank you. - I reach for the folder, but he intercepts my hand. A jolt of electricity passes through my body, and I feel paralyzed by such closeness.

- I didn’t know it was you. - and how am I supposed to understand that? Why did he say that? What if he had known? Would he have immediately refused to cooperate?

- Fate sometimes throws surprises. - Very professional, Amanda; clearly, that sip of wine was too much.

- I just wanted to say. - For the first time, I see pain in Adam's eyes, or perhaps I just imagined it.

- It’s not worth it; Ms. Stewart is probably already waiting for you. - I take the folder and sit in the car. I don’t look back because I might do something I will regret very soon...
