They always said I was different-wolfless, weak, unworthy. For eighteen years, I clung to the hope that on my birthday, everything would change. My wolf would finally come, and with it, the mate bond I'd dreamed about. I'd finally belong.Turns out, I was right about one thing: everything did change. Just not how I expected. The mate bond hit me like lightning at my birthday celebration, tying me to Jason-the cocky, gorgeous fighter training to be our next alpha. For a split second, I thought I'd won. But in front of the entire pack, Jason did the unthinkable: he rejected me. Publicly. Cruelly.Humiliated, heartbroken, and desperate to escape, I ran to the cliffs, ready to end the pain. But fate had other plans. That's when he found me. Sam. Sam wasn't just any wolf-he is the Lycan Prince. And when he looked at me, it wasn't with pity. It was with something far deeper: recognition."Eva," he said, his voice like a promise. "You're mine." Thrown into Sam's world, I discovered that my wolf wasn't missing-it was waiting. Waiting to awaken, waiting to show me that I wasn't just different. I was extraordinary. Now, I'm caught between two packs, a mate bond that burns hotter than I'm ready for, and a power inside me I barely understand. Jason's rejection might've broken me, but Sam? Sam's teaching me to fight back. Because I'm done running. It's time the world sees who I really am.

Chapter 1

Dec 9, 2025

Today was my 18th birthday—the day my wolf was supposed to awaken. For years, I’d whispered that date to myself like a mantra: Eighteen. Just make it to eighteen, and everything will change.

I let out a slow breath and dragged myself out of bed, my legs heavy with the weight of my anticipation. Crossing the room, I paused in front of the small, cracked mirror hanging on my wall. Same brown eyes, same messy waves of dark hair. My reflection offered no answers, no hint of the power I was desperate to find. But maybe today would be different. It had to be.

Pulling on a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt, I braced myself for the day and trudged toward the kitchen. The moment I stepped inside, her voice hit me like nails on a chalkboard.

Jessica.

She leaned casually against the counter, her perfect golden hair catching the morning light. Her smile was sharp, her eyes gleaming with the satisfaction of someone who’d already won the argument in her head.

“Still no wolf, Eva?” she asked, her tone sugary sweet. “Maybe it got stuck in shipping. Check Amazon.”

“Morning to you too, Jessica,” I muttered, forcing myself to keep walking. She thrived on getting under my skin, and I wasn’t giving her the satisfaction—not today.

“Don’t worry,” she called after me, her laughter ringing out. “Maybe you’ll get lucky tonight.”

Breakfast wasn’t much better. The casual glances from other pack members felt like judgment, each one a subtle reminder of what I lacked. Every hushed whisper felt louder than it was, and every accidental glance carried a question they were too polite to say out loud: Why hasn’t she shifted yet?

By the time Mia burst through the door, I was ready to crawl back into bed and pretend this day didn’t exist.

“Happy Birthday!” Mia’s voice was a ray of sunshine in the gloom, her curly red hair bouncing as she threw her arms around me. Her hug was warm, her optimism infectious, and I clung to her like a lifeline.

“Thanks,” I murmured, my voice weak.

“You’re going to be fine,” she said with a bright smile, wagging a finger at me. “And if Jessica looks at you funny tonight, I’ll accidentally dump punch on her dress. Again.”

I laughed despite myself, the tension in my chest easing just a little. I still remembered the look on Jessica’s face last year when Mia’s “accident” left her designer gown in ruins. It was a small moment of victory in an otherwise endless battle.

And then I saw him. Jason.

The pack’s golden boy. He was out in the training field, his movements sharp and calculated as he sparred with another wolf. Sweat glistened on his tan skin, his dark hair falling in effortless waves over his forehead. Every strike, every shift of his stance, radiated confidence and strength.

My stomach twisted, a nervous flutter taking hold as I watched him. Jason was everything I wasn’t—strong, commanding, respected. Even when he was just practicing, he carried himself like the alpha he was destined to become.

I leaned against the wooden fence, staying in the shade of the nearby trees, unnoticed as I let my gaze linger. His sharp jawline caught the light as he turned, and for a brief moment, I was mesmerized by the way his piercing blue eyes narrowed in focus.

And then, almost as if he could feel me watching, his gaze flicked in my direction.

The world seemed to shift, everything else fading into the background as those piercing eyes locked onto mine. My breath caught, my heart pounding so loudly I was sure he could hear it. For a moment, his movements faltered—just slightly—as his focus lingered on me.

My chest tightened, the hope I had kept buried for years rising to the surface. Could it be? Could he be my mate?

The possibility sent a rush of warmth through me, making my fingers curl against the rough wood of the fence. The way he looked at me, the way the air seemed to shift between us—it wasn’t my imagination, was it?

But then his attention snapped back to his opponent, his movements resuming as if nothing had happened. I bit my lip, doubt creeping in like a shadow. What had I expected? That he’d drop everything and run over to me? That he’d feel the same pull I did and just… know?

I stepped back from the fence, retreating into the shade of the trees. My emotions churned in my chest, hope battling with uncertainty. If Jason was my mate, he wasn’t showing it. But that look—that look—had felt like something.
