Description

"There's a falling star!" Mirabelle exclaimed, then quickly stood up. Karl put both hands in the pockets of his shorts. "What are you doing?" Karl was stunned. "Making a wish," she answered softly, her cheeks against his back, her eyes closed. Karl was unable to speak. She could smell the stranger's breath, like a soft wind brushing her ear. And they were in the middle of the ocean, a starry sky above them!

Prologue

Prologue

“H EY!” ani Iris, napatabing bigla.

“Bad day for Krista, huh...”

“You know that’s bad for your heart, Iris,” ani Karl na kumunot ang noo sa pagkakatitig sa sigarilyong sinindihan ni Iris.

“What was that all about?

“I expected that, too. Her voice sounded amuse.

One corner of his mouth twisted upward in a sarcastic smile. It was obvious that she wanted to marry me for my money...”

“Stop being a cynic, Karl!” ani Iris na kumunot ang noo. “I can’t even tell if you’re being arrogantly humble or you are underestimating the attraction you have with women...”

“Hmm. Arrogantly humble...” “Isn’t that a contradiction?” Then he smiled drily. “And talking about my attraction, mas malakas makahatak ng atraksiyon ang pera, my dear aunt.”

Then in a soft and bitter voice, “I had enough betrayals to last me a lifetime.”

“So she also wants your money, you have more than enough, Karl!

“Well, I couldn’t be so sure about that, too...”

Napailing si Iris. “And that is the price you have to pay for having so much... You are all allowed to marry the woman and man of your choice...”

“That’s a big joke, Iris! I am allowed to marry a woman of my choice...” pag-uulit nito sa nanunuyang tono, dinidistansiya ang bawat salita. “Pero paano ang kabuntot na tradisyon? That a woman must be a virgin!

“Ganoon ba kasama iyon, Karl?” Iris asked softly. I am not saying this because your mother’s my sister...”

“At sa kaso ko’y hindi rin nagkamali ang p apa na hadlangan ako sa ginusto kong mangyari, which made me look like a complete fool!” he said angrily.

When he didn’t answer, pinagmasdan ni Iris ang pamangkin. He was twenty-nine, limang taon ang kabataan sa kanya. So imposing and so handsome. And Karl wasn’t just a very good-looking man, he was also very rich.

And bitter... and lonely, too.

Then her eyes went back to the wine bottle.

It just popped up her mind.

She smiled.

“What the hell! Iris that wine was worth—”

She started to write on the label using her pencil lipstick.

“Do you, by chance, have a calling card in your wallet?” ani Iris, tiningala ito.

He probably didn’t notice it. Muli niyang itinaob ang bote ng alak. Halos itagtag.

Iris winked at him.

“You’re crazy! He laughed. “You’ve been watching a lot of nonsense movies, Iris...”

“Life in this planet is so strange, my handsome nephew.

She didn’t really believe that. And Karl was right when he said she was crazy.

“That’s against the law,” ani Karl. “You’re polluting the waters!”

Karl was still laughing when she turned to look at him.

Or maybe that was an overstatement. He didn’t laugh at all. But he was now.

It was a good omen.
