Prologue
Lina sat above the abyss. Below, a fire swirled, hellish birds flew around, and she, hugging her knees, waited for the twentieth year. Only a few minutes remained, and she would finally fulfill her damned destiny. "Voluntary sacrifice" – that’s what the abbess once said. But was it voluntary? Rather forced. Forced and tormented...
The black garment billowed in the wind, carrying with it the frenzied screams of the sinners. She desperately wanted to cover her ears to block them out. They screamed and moaned as if intentionally trying to frighten her. And Lina was already scared enough.
Once again, she recalled Sam. He must have woken up by now, read the letter, and was searching for her, cursing everything in the world, especially Nathan. However, he wouldn't have time to change anything; the girl had taken care of that.
– Sam... Sam... Sam... – she whispered the name of the man she loved more than anything in the world. – This is only for you, Sam. I don’t want a world without you.
Lina abruptly stood up, stones immediately falling from under her shoes.
– Don’t do this, – she heard a whisper ahead. – I beg you.
It was a hazy apparition, the incorporeal spirit of her Samael. He was so real, just like a living being. His tangled black hair, tanned skin, and eyes – horrified by her action.
– Lina, don’t do this, – the spirit repeated.
Looking at him was too painful, so when the first ray of sunlight appeared, the girl said, “goodbye,” and took a step forward.
