Freya

If I could choose to be any animal, it would be a wolf. Not just any wolf, a beautiful she-wolf, with furs as white as snow and eyes as blue as the sky. I would be fine; I know I would be. As well as my love life. It wouldn't be filled with so much pain and endless heartache just like my mom's.

Tears sprang from my eyes, down to my cheek. It gave my skin a tingling sensation and causes me to quickly react wiping it away from my face, but more tears kept coming down as I did. I was used to it; it was something that happened quite often. Standing at my bedroom window, tearfully gazing into the dark sky at the moon, before going off to bed; it was like a night routine. It would end with me pleading to the moon to transform me into a wolf as if the moon had ears to hear. I would laugh at myself, deeming myself to be crazy, and for having a large imagination from reading too many romances wolf shifter novels; I considered it to be true.

I got out of bed and stride to the bathroom mirror before going downstairs. I checked to see if my eyes were swollen, they were. They were red and puffy as usual. I washed my face and starts to apply my makeup, covering my face with enough foundation, blushes, and eye shadow that showed no sign that I'd cried myself to sleep. I took a long look at myself before leaving, making sure my look was not too much and was natural for a seventeen-year-old, not that my mom would notice anyways. She was too busy being all over her twentieth man, she believes surely this time, was the one who will never leave her. I chuckled at the thought. When will she learn?

Mom was all cozy sitting in her boyfriend's lap around the dining table when I got downstairs. My eyes rolled irritated as she giggles while Jack fondles her and kept leaving short kisses on her neck and down to her bosom.

"Teenager in the room," I felt awkward about their manners.

They made me feel like I was the parent in the home, and they, the teenagers presumed they were mad for each other.

I hastily moved past them into the kitchen before Jack who I loathed, could say anything to me; I stop liking any of the men my mom dated seeing they were all just the same. Heartbreakers. They treated her well until they've eventually become bored of her, leaving me as always to deal with her tears and the sadness of a broken heart.

I poured out a bowl of chocolate cereal and milk and impatiently went back to my room. During the summer that's how my life has been, locking myself in the room while I ate and read werewolf romances, about proper men who never cheated on their mates. If only humans mated like wolves did, I wouldn't be so depressed by my mom's miserable love life and I wouldn't be so afraid to fall in love. My mom would be okay with the one she was made to be with, her soulmate.

I heard my mom burst out in laughter downstairs, I got up and slammed the door. I couldn't wait for summer to end to return to school, school was a form of escape. An avoidance of having to deal with my mom and her boyfriends. Unfortunately, school reopens in two weeks, I couldn't wait.

I placed the empty bowl onto my bedside table and laid down turning to the next page of Werewolf Crush by A.K. Knight, I chuckled at how silly Jenny the female lead character was.

I heard my mom scream, I threw aside the book and ran from my room. I was surprised to witness my mom being twirled in the air when I got downstairs.

Jack placed her down as they spotted me, and she ran towards me.

"Honey, Jack has asked me to travel with him while he works," she was bursting with excitement.

"What!" I was shaken by the news.

"I'm so sorry but you won't be completing your final year at Castle High, you will have to stay with your grandma and your grand aunt."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The shocking news made me speechless.

I watched my mom as she kept leaping in joy and returned to Jack, kissing him.

The words that came from my mom's mouth were just too difficult to process. There was no way my mom was going to drop me off in a town that anyone hardly knows so she could travel with her boyfriend.

"Mom, you can't do this to me," I began to sob. "You can't allow me to go to a new high school when I'm almost through with Castle High."

"Jack, please give me and my daughter some time, alone."

I glared at Jack until he was out of sight.

My mom took me by the hand and placed me to sit around the dining table. She sat next to me as she did.

"I know honey that this a big change for you right now, but I have to do this, I love Jack."

I pulled my hand from hers bitterly, "He's just like all the others, he'll soon get bored with you as well."

My mom's eyes widen, and she leaped from her chair wounded by my words.

"Mom, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that, I'm just trying to protect you."

"No, I'm the mother and you're the daughter it's not your job to protect me. It's the other way around. It's my job to protect you," she argued. She then stepped away upset.

"Mom, I didn't mean to," I kept crying.

I've always been "the quiet, nerdy girl." The girl with her nose buried in a book, the girl people barely notice. But my world is a lot more complicated than it seems. You see, I'm absolutely, hopelessly in love with my best friend, Logan Reyes-the bad boy everyone wants but nobody can quite hold onto. And he has no idea. Logan and I have been friends forever. We banter, we laugh, and we're close. But to him, I'm just Emma, the girl he'll confide in about everything-except his new flings, like Vanessa, the school's reigning queen bee. She's got her sights on Logan and everyone knows it. Meanwhile, Logan and I share this strange, unspoken chemistry that I can't ignore, even if we act like it's no big deal. But everything changes the night I get roped into a game of spin the bottle at Vanessa's party. When the bottle lands on Logan, he kisses me in front of everyone-and suddenly, it's like I'm seeing Logan in a whole new light, and he's seeing me differently, too. Now he's paying me attention in a way that's unsettling, thrilling, and absolutely forbidden. And just when I think I can ignore it, Logan begins pursuing me-unabashedly, against all the rules he's lived by and despite his so-called girlfriend's wishes. Now, I'm caught in a whirlwind of gossip, jealousy, and emotions I can barely handle. Logan's breaking his own rules for me, and the harder I try to resist him, the more I find myself pulled back.
