Chapter 5

Secrets and Silence

Jun 22, 2025

Camille trudged back home after the longest day she could remember, her mind a chaotic swirl of emotions. She was greeted by the comforting smell of her mother’s cooking and the gentle hum of the kitchen radio as she walked in. Her mother turned around, her face lighting up with a warm smile.

"Welcome home, dear! How was your first day?" Kate asked, her eyes full of curiosity and concern.

"It was... intense," Camille replied, doing her best to muster a convincing smile. She didn't want to worry her mother with the complicated web of interactions she had faced that day.

Kate nodded sympathetically. "I can imagine. Starting a new school is never easy, but trust me, it will get better."

"I hope so," Camille mumbled, slipping past her mother and heading up to her room. She needed solitude to sort through the whirlwind she had just experienced.

As she lay on her bed, thoughts of the day washed over her—From Noah's comfort to Leo's boldness and the strange, tense energy from Matthew. The emotional rollercoaster had left her exhausted. Deciding to keep it all to herself for now, she closed her eyes, hoping some rest would bring clarity.

As she fell asleep there was no peace in her dreams, being some sort captivated by all three brothers made her feel terrible about the whole situation. So when somebody knocked on her door she felt the relief of being back to reality no matter how unpleasant it was. It was her mom. Evening came quickly, and with it, a family invitation to the neighbors’ house for dinner. Camille hadn’t needed to ask; her mother had excitedly mentioned it earlier. Matthew, Leo, and Noah’s family had extended the invitation, and it seemed rude to decline on their first day. Camille steeled herself for what she knew would be an emotionally charged evening.

Dressed in a simple yet elegant dress, she made her way downstairs to join her family. "Ready, dear?" her mother asked.

"As I'll ever be," Camille murmured.

They walked over to the neighbors’ house, the twilight sky casting a beautiful glow over everything. Mrs. Parker, Matthew's mother, greeted them warmly at the door. "Welcome, welcome! Please, come in."

Camille stepped inside, and her eyes were immediately drawn to the twins, Leo and Noah, who were already seated at the dining table, smiling at her as if they had a secret to share. Leo winked, while Noah gave her a reassuring nod. Noah doesn’t seem to know what happened to her in that dark classroom, so Leo doesn’t really share everything with him.

Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Matthew across the room, his cold steel eyes locking onto hers for a brief, intense moment. As they settled at the table, Camille found herself sitting between Leo and Noah, directly facing Matthew, who looked more brooding than ever. Matthew’s father took his seat at the head of the table and began making small talk with Alex, breaking the initial silence.

The first course was served, and the air was thick with unspoken tension. Camille could feel the weight of Matthew’s gaze on her, each stolen glance adding to the growing pressure. Her pulse quickened as she nervously picked at her food.

"So, Camille, how was your first day at school?" Matthew suddenly broke the silence.

“Like any other day at school, nothing special…” Camille tried to spot Leo’s reaction, but he remained silent and didn’t show a bit of emotion which made her angry. How dare he not be ashamed of his behavior? She turned her head towards Matthew who looked cold and intrigued. “My God, he is handsome,” Camille thought.

"I met some people and tried to get a feel for things." Camille continued after a small pause.

Leo suddenly leaned in, his voice playful. "I think she’s understating it. She’s already made quite an impression."

Matthew's fork clattered against his plate, and he glared at Leo. "Must you joke about everything?"

Leo shrugged, unfazed by his brother’s anger. "Just trying to lighten the mood."

The tension between the brothers was palpable, and Camille could feel herself being drawn into their silent battle.

Noah leaned towards her, his tone gentle. "Don't mind him. Matthew has his own ways of dealing with things."

"I can see that," Camille replied, trying to keep her voice steady. Her mind was racing, wondering what she had done to incur Matthew’s wrath. Their eyes met again, and she couldn’t read his expression—was it anger, jealousy, or something else entirely?

As the dinner progressed, the undercurrent of tension only grew stronger. Camille found herself caught in the maze of stolen looks and hidden emotions. Every time Matthew’s gaze swept over her, she felt a jolt of electricity.

At one point, she accidentally brushed her hand against Leo’s, and Matthew’s eyes darkened noticeably. He tightened his grip on his fork, muscles taut with barely restrained anger. The intensity was suffocating.

Unable to bear it any longer, Camille excused herself to the restroom, needing a moment to breathe. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, trying to calm her racing heart. "What is happening to me?" she wondered.

When she exited the restroom she met Matthew in the corridor. He seemed waiting for her, she didn’t know what to think, what to say, there was nothing to be ashamed of, but still, she felt shame of the whole world pressing on her. He stepped towards her and looked directly into her eyes without saying a word.
